Graeme Souness: Why Brendan Rodgers still has big job to do at Liverpool
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness says Brendan Rodgers still has a big job to do at Anfield
Brendan Rodgers still has a lot of big job to do at Liverpool, according to Graeme Souness.
The Reds made a positive start to the new Premier League season after a 1-0 victory over Stoke City at Britannia Stadium on Sunday evening.
He has been at Liverpool for three years now and he will realise the magnitude and size of the club. It is a big job that he has got there
The Liverpool manager spent over £80m on new signings this summer after overseeing a major revamp of his squad following last season’s sixth-place finish.
But former Reds captain Souness reckons Rodgers could be under mounting pressure this season if the Merseyside outfit fail to build on their positive start.
“In the mix you will have the Europa League as well, which will take your focus off the Premier League, but he has got a very hard start,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“As a manager of one of the big clubs – we have talked about it before – you are under pressure if you lose two games back to back, as questions are asked.
“What compounds the pressure is if you go out and spend big money – he did that last summer and he has gone out and done it again this summer.
“And that is why there are so many people talking about Liverpool right now. But he will know that. He has been at Liverpool for three years now and he will realise the magnitude and size of the club. It is a big job that he has got there.”
Rodgers signed James Milner on a free transfer from Manchester City earlier this summer, whilst Danny Ings completed a bosman move to Anfield from Burnley.
The Liverpool boss signed Christian Benteke in a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa last month, as well as bringing Roberto Firmino to the Reds in a £29m switch from Hoffenheim.
