How Liverpool’s summer signings performed against Bournemouth

Liverpool striker Christian Benteke finds the net as five summer signings make their Anfield debut

By Dipak Patel

Christian Benteke

Eyebrows were raised at the £32.5m that Liverpool paid to secure the services of the Belgian but what he offers is verticality. Liverpool’s ethos last season was to often play out from the back but with Christian Benteke they have the option of kicking it long as he is powerful in the air, and proficient at holding the ball up. It was a strong performance from Benteke and although his goal was fortunate due to Philippe Coutinho being offside, he showed good instincts to follow up Jordan Henderson’s cross. 8/10

Joe Gomez

When Joe Gomez was purchased from Charlton for £3.5m, it was expected that the Englishman would be nothing more than an understudy to Alberto Moreno, however, Brendan Rodgers saw enough of the 18-year-old in pre-season to give him a chance and he has impressed in the opening two games. He showed defensive naivety at times against Matt Ritchie who drifted in-field from his wide position to create chances and take shots at goal. But overall it was another encouraging performance from a player who is learning all the time. 6

James Milner

Liverpool’s most astute purchase of the summer not only because of his variety, but also the experience he brings to the side. At Manchester City, James Milner was often forced to play out wide but it was always felt his best position was in the centre. At Liverpool, he is getting his chance and has already built up a good understanding with midfield partner Henderson. Milner very rarely has bad games and does a lot of work off the ball that goes unnoticed and was again effective in his role against Bournemouth. 7

Nathaniel Clyne

The price that Liverpool paid for Nathaniel Clyne (£12.5m) appears to be a bargain but the Englishman will have to improve on the defensive side of his game. Max Gradel and full-back Charlie Daniels gained a bit of joy on the left-hand side due to Clyne’s wayward positioning. But as the game wore on the 24-year-old got stronger and was certainly a threat going forward linking well Adam Lallana whom he knows well from their time together at Southampton. 6

Roberto Firmino

Didn’t really offer anything when he came on but in his defence Liverpool were happy to sit on their 1-0 lead so he didn’t get to show what he could do. The former Hoffenheim player will get his chance and the potential link-up with fellow Brazilian Coutinho will have Liverpool fans salivating. Roberto Firmino thinks like a striker and is always looking to get in behind the defence so will give them a different sort of option moving forward. 5
