Jamie Carragher: Man United captain Wayne Rooney needed confidence boost
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher runs rule over Wayne Rooney's mid-week hat-trick for Manchester United
Jamie Carragher says Wayne Rooney needed his mid-week confidence boost ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Swansea City on Sunday afternoon.
The 29-year-old United captain scored a 57-minute hat-trick in a 4-0 victory over Club Brugge in the second leg of their Champions League play-off on Wednesday night.
It will do Wayne wonders but also the team as well
Rooney’s treble ended his goal drought after the Red Devils skipper failed to score in United’s opening four games of the season in all competitions despite being played in a centre-forward role.
And Liverpool legend Carragher, who retired from professional football in 2013, believes even players of Rooney’s quality can go through a crisis of confidence.
Carragher told Sky Sports: “Every player, even a player of Wayne Rooney’s ability and with what he’s achieved in the game, will still need a confidence boost,” Carragher said.
“It will do Wayne wonders but also the team as well. They have been struggling to score goals, not just Wayne, so to get a few goals in the week, it gives them that confidence not just for this game but for the coming week.
“They seem to have been very successful at one end of the pitch, but at the other end they obviously need to start scoring more goals. I’m sure it will do them well.”
United and Rooney have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season after 1-0 victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa followed by a goalless stalemate with Newcastle United.
The Red Devils face Swansea at Liberty Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
