Jamie Carragher: Why Liverpool’s win was so important
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher explains why the Reds's 1-0 victory over Stoke City was so important
Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s Britannia Stadium win was huge for Brendan Rodgers ahead of a tough run of away fixture in the Premier League.
The Reds sealed three points thanks to Philippe Coutinho’s brilliant 86th-minute winner which netted a dramatic 1-0 victory for the Reds.
If Liverpool had lost today – you’d expect them to beat Bournemouth – but it puts more pressure on the Arsenal game
Liverpool face Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City in their next seven away games in the Premier League.
Former Reds centre-half Carragher, who retired from professional football in May 2013, felt their win against the Potters was vital.
“Of course it is a big result,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “You look at those fixtures to come, and the results they got in them last season.
“Okay it is a different set of players, but the hand they were dealt in the fixture list – on the back of finishing the season poorly – and even Liverpool in great form it would be difficult to pick up many points in a lot of those away games.
“You are playing against big rivals, there are derby games in there, so a lot of the time in those games, if you pick up a point, you are pleased.”
Carragher added that Liverpool can go into their next away clash against Arsenal with more confidence following their narrow win against Stoke.
“So to get three points from the start is pleasing. If Liverpool had lost today – you’d expect them to beat Bournemouth – but it puts more pressure on the Arsenal game,” Carragher continued.
The Merseyside outfit climbed up to fifth place in the Premier League table after top-four rivals Arsenal and Chelsea dropped points in their opening games.
Liverpool take on Eddie Howe’s newly-promoted Bournemouth at Anfield in the first home game of the Premier League campaign next weekend.
