Jose Mourinho: Arsenal won but Chelsea were the better team
Jose Mourinho feels that his Chelsea side were unlucky to lose to Arsenal after Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Wembley
Jose Mourinho claimed that the best team lost after watching his Chelsea side lose 1-0 to Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired home the only goal of the game in the 24th minute at Wembley as the Gunners won the first piece of silverware on offer in the 2015-16 campaign.
The Blues enjoyed 57 per cent of possession at Wembley but failed to make the breakthrough against a stubborn Arsenal rearguard.
They played their game tactically and found themselves one goal in front without any reason
Mourinho offered his congratulations to the north London side but claimed that the Gunners defended “with 10 men” behind the ball on their way to victory.
Mourinho told BT Sport: “We were the best team. We had more initiative, we controlled the game by having ball possession.
“But when a team is behind, the energy and intensity to turn results around is more difficult because people are not sharp. Arsenal defended with 10 players, they put everybody in front of their own line and they had good organisation, congratulations to them.
“They had a couple of chances in counter attacks but we had ours in organised football.
“They played their game tactically and found themselves one goal in front without any reason, included players in the back and they did well.”
Meanwhile, goal-scorer Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted that there is a positive mood in the Arsenal camp at the moment as the north London side look to win their first Premier League title since 2004.
The England midfielder told BT Sport: “This squad’s been together for a good number of years now, and with the signing of Petr Cech we’ve been lifted. He’s such an amazing player and has already shown what a good signing he is.
“There is a really good feeling about this season but you never want to speak too soon. The real work starts next week.
Chelsea kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
