Jose Mourinho discusses Chelsea beat Man United to Pedro signing
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he doesn't seen signing Pedro Rodriguez as a win over Manchester United
Jose Mourinho says he doesn’t view Chelsea signing Pedro Rodriguez as getting one over title rivals Manchester United.
The Red Devils were thought to be leading the race to sign the Spain international earlier this week after chief executive Ed Woodward was reported to have flown to Barcelona to finalise a deal.
The point is that Pedro is a player that we like a lot and we are happy to have
However, defending Premier League champions Chelsea announced the £21.1m signing of the World Cup winner on Thursday afternoon after United had reportedly withdrawn from the race to sign Pedro.
But Chelsea manager Mourinho, whose side haven’t won a Premier League game this season, played down the significance of Pedro’s move to Stamford Bridge ahead of the 20-time English champions.
“I only want to beat Man United on the pitch if it’s possible,” Mourinho told his pre-match media conference on Friday afternoon.
“I don’t even want to go in that direction. Our job here is not to try to get a player that another club wants, our job is to get players that I think are good for us.
“Sometimes players are not successful – obviously we are the ones to blame for that, but the market is an opportunity window where you have to be careful not to lose your best players.
“It’s an opportunity window to sometimes get players that you are not expected to get. The point is that Pedro is a player that we like a lot and we are happy to have.”
Pedro has won five La Liga titles, the Champions League three times and four Copa del Rey crowns during an eight-year career at the Catalan side.
Chelsea face West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Sunday afternoon.
