Juan Mata: Why I’m excited by Man United signings
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata explains the positives the Red Devils can take from their win against Tottenham
Juan Mata says Manchester United can take plenty of positives from their 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
A Kyle Walker own goal sealed three points for Louis van Gaal’s side in the opening game of the Premier League season despite a sluggish performance from the home side.
It’s exciting to see how quickly they get settled
But Mata felt there were encouraging signs for the Red Devils, and the United midfielder was particularly impressed with the debuts of Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Bastian Schweinsteigter.
“There were a few positive things apart from the score,” Mata wrote on his blog.
“Old Trafford saw the debut of many new players, and personally I think all of them had a good performance. It’s exciting to see how quickly they get settled and the warm welcome they got from our supporters!”
The Red Devils face Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Friday evening, before the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Club Brugge next week.
And Mata, who moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea in a £37.1m deal in 2013, discussed what will be a big couple of weeks for the 20-time English champions.
“From this Monday our minds are focused on the next game against Aston Villa,” Mata added.
“They have started at a good level after beating Bournemouth away. Then we will face one of the key dates in our calendar: the first leg of the Champions League play-off round against Club Brugge. But let’s go step by step. Right now we must think about the Premier League and try to add up three more points.”
Van Gaal signed five new players in the summer transfer window.
