Wenger gives latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Newcastle trip
Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are both doubts for Arsenal's Premier League trip to Newcastle United
Arsenal could be without defender Per Mertesacker for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United, Arsene Wenger has confirmed.
The German World Cup winner sat out Monday night’s goalless draw with Liverpool due to illness and may not have recovered in time for the lunchtime clash at St James’ Park this weekend.
Mertesacker’s defensive partner Laurent Koscielny will also undergo a late fitness test ahead of the clash after he too missed Monday’s stalemate with a back problem.
Speaking at a news conference at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground on Thursday morning, Wenger said: “Per Mertesacker is still ill and we will know more about Laurent Koscielny after he has a test.”
Wenger also delivered an update on the fitness of striker Danny Welbeck, who is yet to feature this season after missing the end of the last campaign with a knee injury.
Asked about the former Manchester United man, Wenger added: “Welbeck is progressing well and should be back after the international break.”
Arsenal head to St James’ Park looking to return to winning ways after taking just four points from their opening three Premier League games this season.
