Liverpool 1 Bournemouth 0: Brendan Rodgers praises Christian Benteke
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers runs rule over Christian Benteke's goal-scoring Anfield debut against Bournemouth
Brendan Rodgers praised Christian Benteke after the Liverpool striker fired the Reds to victory over Bournemouth on his Anfield debut on Monday night.
The Belgium international scored a controversial goal in the 26th minute after he prodded Jordan Henderson’s cross past Artur Boruc, who appeared to be distracted by Philippe Coutinho standing in an offside position.
When the ball comes into the box he is a real threat and handful
Benteke, who moved to Liverpool in a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa earlier this summer, could have added a second with two minutes remaining but his close-range strike hit the crossbar and bounced to safety.
But Liverpool manager Rodgers was pleased with the options that Benteke provided his Reds side.
“Christian Benteke gives us other options, his hold-up play was excellent,” Rodgers told Sky Sport. “When the ball comes into the box he is a real threat and handful. He deserved his goal.”
Liverpool have secured back-to-back clean sheets and victories after successive 1-0 wins against Stoke City and Bournemouth to start their season.
And Rodgers, whose side face Arsenal at The Emirates next Monday, was delighted with Liverpool’s defensive performance against the Cherries.
Rodgers added: “”I’m very pleased for the players, six points, two clean sheets and the team will grow. A glut of new players finding their feet.”
