Liverpool 1 Bournemouth 0: Christian Benteke reflects on ‘good debut’
Liverpool striker Christian Benteke speaks of delight at scoring on his Anfield debut against Bournemouth
Christian Benteke expressed his delight at a good Anfield debut after the striker scored Liverpool’s winner against Bournemouth.
The Belgium international netted a fortuitous goal in the first half after he managed to direct Jordan Henderson’s cross past Artur Boruc at full-stretch despite Philippe Coutinho standing in an offside position.
Benteke could have added a second in the closing moments of the Monday night fixture after he was found by Nathaniel Clyne, but the £32.5m summer signing’s strike hit the crossbar.
Speaking to Sky Sports following the win, Benteke said that he was pleased to score his first Liverpool goal and seal an important three points.
“A good debut for myself but the most important thing is the goal. The more important thing is the clean sheet,” Benteke said.
Philippe Coutinho had the best of Liverpool’s other chances but the Brazil international was first denied by Boruc before his second-half volley was blocked by the Bournemouth defence.
And James Milner, who took over the captain’s armband following Jordan Henderson’s substitution early in the second half, heaped praise on Coutinho.
Milner said: “”Philippe Coutinho has time to improve and he is a top player already. He is so difficult to mark.”
