Liverpool have been dealt a blow in the race to sign Mateo Kovacic after Guillem Balague claimed the Inter Milan midfielder is set to join Real Madrid.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Croatia international as Brendan Rodgers looks to unearth a long-term replacement for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

The 21-year-old scored five goals in 35 Serie A games for Inter last season, underlining his blossoming reputation as one of Europe’s most-promising midfielders.

But La Liga expert Balague took to Twitter to reveal Kovacic, who has made 21 appearances for Croatia national team, is set join Real Madrid in a £25m deal in the summer transfer window.

The Croatia midfielder has netted 17 times in 170 appearances for the San Siro outfit over the past three seasons in Milan.
