Man United 0 Newcastle 0: Player ratings as Wayne Rooney struggles

Player ratings as Manchester United are unable to beat Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday

Manchester United

Sergio Romero Was rarely tested in the first and second half compared to Krul. Made a controversial decision, which he was let off for as the flag was called for offside. The new United goalie looks a bit rocky. United have to watch out for this as it could be a problem for them later on in the season. 5/10

Matteo Darmian Can see he is a fantastic player running forward as well as tracking back. He is a great summer signing for United as he has progressed them in a area that was needed. 7

Chris Smalling Blind and Smalling have created a great partnership. Smalling continues to defend well and defend his penalty area. Smalling hit the post in the 90th minute. 6

Daley Blind At the start of the season, we were left wondering why Van Gaal had chosen Blind for the centre-half role. He has started to strike up a fantastic partnership with Smalling and kept tracking back. 7

Luke Shaw Had a great early cross at the start of the game but couldn’t find anyone in the box. 6

Morgan Schneiderlin He was not as dominant or present as he was in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday. However, still showed how well he plays in defensive midfield. 6

Bastian Schweinsteiger Was given far too much space from Newcastle, which allowed him to show why United signed him in the summer window before being substituted in the second half. Had a cut to his right ankle. 6

Juan Mata One of his main attributes is how quick he can counter an attack. His speed was impressive to watch. Had a chance to open the scoring but his shot was too high. 7

Adnan Januzaj Did not see much of Januzaj in the first half. Pushed forward more in the second. Was substituted for Hernandez. 6

Memphis Depay He was skipping past along the Newcastle midfield and defence. Had a few shots on target in the first half but couldn’t find the net. 7

Wayne Rooney Scored in the third minute of the game but the goal was ruled for offside. The goal drought continues. 6

Substitutions

Michael Carrick N/A

Javier Hernandez Had a great chance to make it 1-0 United but instead of rounding the keeper it played straight to Krul’s hands. 4

Antonio Valencia N/A

Newcastle United

Tim Krul (Man of the match) Was tested early into the first half but remained composed under pressure. Made crucial saves in the second half. Was pressed all afternoon and did not buckle. He kept Newcastle in the game. 8

Chancel Mbemba Credit to Newcastle defence as he squeezed the United players wide and pushed them back. Credit also goes to Steve McClaren as Newcastle have shown progess in their defensive strategies. 6

Fabricio Coloccini The captain kept composure throughout. Great tackle deep into the first half to prevent Depay from trying for a shot on target. Defended in the area well. 7

Steven Taylor Defended well in the first half. Made some crucial blocks to keep it 0-0 in the first half. 6

Massadio Haidara Had a good block to prevent United scoring early on in the first half. Had a late challenge on Blind that resulted in a yellow card. 6

Vurnon Anita Gave a free-kick to Man United 11 minutes into the game, it seemed the tackle was needed. 5

Jack Colback Colback continues to impress for Newcastle. He created problems for United’s midfield all afternoon by pushing forward and defending in his penalty area. 6

Ayoze Perez Had a chance to score a wonder goal in the first half but was tipped over the edge by Romero. Had to do more defending rather than attacking. 6

Georginio Wijnaldum Newcastle played a defensive strategy throughout the game and Wijnaldum did what his manager asked. 5

Gabriel Oberton Did well trying to press forward but slightly struggled against the United’s defence. Made some good crosses throughout the game before being substituted. 5

Aleksandar Mitrovic Was left upfront on his own for a lengthy spell in the second half. Could have done more if others would have gone towards goal. 5

Substitutions

Florian Thauvin N/A

Cheick Tiote After suffering from a bad knee injury, did well in his first game back by helping his teammates defend. 4

Papiss Cisse He missed a chance in the dying minutes of the game to make it 1-0 Newcastle. 3
