Man United 1 Tottenham 0: Player ratings as Chris Smalling impresses

Player ratings as Manchester United centre-half Chris Smalling produces commanding performance in Red Devils defence

Manchester United

Sergio Romero Not much to do in the first half, but was kept busy in the second with plenty of good catches from Spurs’s crosses, and some fine saves after late pressure from Tottenham. 7/10

Matteo Darmian Held his own against Spurs winger Chadli, and contributed to a number of United attacks. A promising debut by the Italian, who did not put a foot wrong. 8

Chris Smalling (Man of the match) Won his personal dual with Kane, and made some fantastic tackles to thwart Spurs attacks. 8

Daley Blind Made no major mistakes but the Dutchman does not look entirely comfortable as a centre-half. 5

Luke Shaw Had a quiet first period when Spurs were on top, but looked a threat going forward when United began to take control. Showed great pace and skill down the left flank. 8

Morgan Schneiderlin Enjoyed a strong debut for United, working well with Michael Carrick. Covered his defence well. 7

Michael Carrick The United veteran did what he does best. Holding the ball well in midfield and intercepting Spurs’s passes. Thwarted any threat that the Spurs midfield had to offer. 7

Juan Mata Gave 100% effort as always, and looked lively playing on the right side of the attack. Got better as the game went on and played a large role in United’s counter attacks. 8

Memphis Depay Showed great confidence on his United debut, keeping the ball at his feet and taking on players. Received a strong ovation from the crowd when he was subbed off for Ander Herrera. 7

Ashley Young Struggled to get past Spurs right-back Kyle Walker. Walker more than matched him for pace and strength. 7

Wayne Rooney Under clear instructions to stay forward and not drop back into midfield as much as he is used to. Slow to react to a cross from Young, and was lucky that Walker poked the ball into his own net. 6
Substitutes

Bastian Schweinsteiger He received warm reception when he came on for Carrick on 60 minutes. Booked not long after coming on. Lead the midfield well and got back to defend. 6

Ander Herrera He worked well as part of a midfield three with Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin. Not given enough time to have a real impact. 5

Antonio Valencia Brought some experience onto the field and defended well during Spurs late flurry of attacks. 5

Tottenham Hotspur

Michel Vorm Unlucky with the goal as Walker stabbed it past him. Decent save from Young’s shot in 64th minute. He won’t produce a serious challenge for the Spurs No1 spot. 6

Kyle Walker Unlucky with the own goal after a strong start to the game. Proved to be Spurs’s most dangerous man in a poor display by the team. 7

Toby Alderweireld Met an early corner with a header into the area. Struggled at times to deal with United’s attack. 6

Jan Vertonghen He picked up a booking with foul on Mata to give away a free-kick in a dangerous position. Like Alderweireld, he did not manage to get the upper hand on Rooney. 6

Ben Davies Played his part in a strong start for Spurs, but fell off as United began to take control. 5

Mousa Dembele Failed to have an impact on the right wing. He was kept quiet by Shaw for most of the game, and lacked the pace to pose a serious threat on the flank. Subbed off for Lamela. 4

Eric Dier Naturally a defender, he struggled with the midfield battle. Showed his frustration on 75 minutes with a foul that saw him booked. Subbed for Alli. 5

Nabil Bentaleb Gave away ball that lead to United’s goal, and came off second best in midfield battle with Carrick and Schneiderlin. Subbed off on 53rd minute for Mason. 5

Nacer Chadli Outplayed by debutant Darmian on the day. The one chance he had to make a serious threat he was stopped thanks to a great tackle from Smalling. 5

Christian Eriksen Not given the time and space to play as well as he can. Forced to push back deep into midfield, and generally muscled out of the game by United’s midfield. 5

Harry Kane Came off second best in his own dual with Smalling. Made a poor pass out wide late that spoiled a possible counter attack. 5

Substitues

Ryan Mason Had a tough task of competing with Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin. Came off second best. 5

Erik Lamela Injected some much needed pace into the Spurs line-up, but failed to have a major impact. 4

Dele Alli Came on late and failed to make much change. Booked for a challenge on Ashley Young. 5
