Man United need to sign two strikers and a centre-half, says Arsenal legend
Manchester United need to sign two strikers and a centre-half before the summer transfer window shuts, according to Charlie Nicholas.
Louis van Gaal has significantly strengthened his midfield options this summer after he snapped up Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay.
I think they still have a lot of work to do
The United manager has also signed Italy international Matteo Darmian in an £11.5m deal from Torino, but he has been left frustrated in his attempts to sign Sergio Ramos and Nicolas Otamendi.
Former Arsenal forward Nicholas reckons Van Gaal still needs to add some quality players to his squad to avoid United being left short during the season.
Nicholas told Sky Sports: “Six points out of six is a great start but Manchester United haven’t been impressive and I think they are three players shy of being serious title contenders.
“Up front, there’s Wayne Rooney – but you need three top strikers to pick from. James Wilson did well last season as a wide man but I don’t think you can put him in that category yet. They need two strikers.
“I also think they could do with another centre-back. Phil Jones is consistently injured so they need back-up there. I think they still have a lot of work to do.”
The Red Devils are in fourth place in the Premier League table after back-to-back wins.
United were 1-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the season courtesy of a Kyle Walker own goal.
Adnan Januzaj netted the away side’s winner in a 1-0 victory at Aston Villa last Friday.
