Man United transfers: Spanish football expert delivers Neymar update
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague gives the latest on Neymar's future as he continues to be linked with Manchester United
Manchester United have not made an official approach to sign Neymar, but the reports linking the Barcelona star to Old Trafford are set to gather pace, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
The Red Devils have been reported to be keeping tabs on the Brazil star as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his attacking options at United ahead of his second full season in charge at the club.
Balague claims that Neymar’s representatives have hinted that the player would be open to joining United as they prepare to open negotiations surrounding the 23-year-old’s contract at Camp Nou.
Balague says that United have not registered any concrete interest in the player as of yet, but expects the transfer saga to hit more headlines in the coming days, weeks and months.
Balague wrote in a column for Yahoo Sport: “Neymar’s people have already fired the first shots across the Barcelona bows helping offer to media the ‘revelation’ that Manchester United are interested in the player – maybe not for this summer though, or so the stories say. Why do they come out now?
“It is all nonsense of course and certainly something that will have come as a bit of a surprise to United.
“Ed Woodward was in Barcelona for a short, slightly bizarre meeting a week ago, the main purpose of which seemed to be to express some interest in Pedro, but not with much enthusiasm.
“Perhaps he was trying to get the player’s price reduced or at least delay payment. It’s fair to assume that had they really wanted the player, a little more enthusiasm would not have gone amiss.
“Within the next few hours, if it hasn’t appeared already, expect to see splash headlines appearing in the Brazilian paper El Globo revealing exclusively that Neymar will fulfil a lifetime’s ambition by playing in the Premier League if he decides to join Manchester United who will offer a jaw-dropping 190 million euros for him. That is a leak from the Neymar family, who looks after his interests.”
Manchester United return to Premier League action when they take on Swansea City this weekend.
The Red Devils were pitted with PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg in Champions League Group B in Thursday’s draw.
