Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino lifts lid on Harry Kane's fitness after 2-2 draw with Stoke City

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane after the Spurs manager withdrew the PFA young player of the year in the second half of their 2-2 draw with Stoke City.

The north London were leading 2-0 when Pochettino opted to withdraw the England international with 26 minutes remaining at White Hart Lane, but late goals from Marko Arnautovic and Mame Biram Diouf denied Spurs victory.

Kane was part of England’s Under-21 squad that failed to get out of the group stage of the European championship despite a long, gruelling domestic campaign.

And Tottenham boss Pochettino revealed he didn’t want to take any risks with Kane at the start of the Premier League season.

“He was tired,” Pochettino is quoted as saying. “He came later into pre-season but this is normal. He needs time.

“Last season we spoke a lot about Harry Kane and the consequence [of playing for England Under-21s] you can see now. At 2-0 after 65-70 minutes I thought that was enough for him. Don’t take risks with his body.”

Kane was named the PFA young player of the year after the Spurs striker scored 31 goals in all competitions last season.
