Memphis Depay admits Man United ‘honour’

Memphis Depay reveals his pride at wearing the number seven shirt at Manchester United

Memphis Depay admits that he is “honoured” to wear Manchester United’s number seven shirt and insists that he is away of the history of the famous jersey.

The Netherlands international took the number previously worn by the likes of David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo following his transfer to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven earlier this summer.

Depay wore the number seven shirt for the first time as he made his first Premier League appearance in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

And the 21-year-old winger admits that it fills him with pride to wear the special shirt at his new club and insists that he understands its significance.

Depay is quoted as saying by Goal: “Yes, of course [I’m aware of the pressure] and the history.

“I appreciate the history, but I want to be my own man. It’s an honour to wear the number seven and I will wear it with pride.

“Last year I played with seven on my back [for PSV] and I scored a lot of goals so I am confident with that number.”

Depay will be expecting to feature when Manchester United take on Aston Villa in their next Premier League game on Friday night.

The winger played 68 minutes of United’s 1-0 win over Spurs as Kyle Walker’s first-half own goal handed the north London side victory.
