Memphis Depay can emulate David Beckham, declares Man United legend
Memphis Depay can match David Beckham in the set-piece stakes, says Denis Irwin
Memphis Depay can match David Beckham’s set-piece deliveries for Manchester United in the seasons to come, according to Denis Irwin.
The Netherlands international joined the Red Devils from PSV Eindhoven earlier in the summer and has already impressed during United’s pre-season tour of North America.
Depay was in top form for PSV last season as he helped them win the Dutch title.
And former Manchester United full-back Irwin is expecting Depay to develop into a key player for the Red Devils, especially in dead-ball situations.
Irwin told United’s website: “I think Memphis could match Becks in that sense. I saw him score a few goals last year for PSV and I think he will be a big addition to our team.
“It’s still early days yet, but there’s no doubt that he has a lot of talent. He brings that unpredictability and we don’t possess too many players like that.
“His records will tell you that, even though he’s young, he’s a goal-scorer as well, having scored 28 goals last year in Holland. We’ve already seen how good he is at finishing, so I think he’ll become a big player for us even though he’s young.”
Depay scored his first United goal in the 3-1 pre-season victory over the San Jose Earthquakes last month.
Depay is one of four new arrivals at Manchester United this summer, with the Red Devils having also signed Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin in recent weeks.
United kick off their Premier League campaign against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
