Mourinho delivers latest Chelsea injury update ahead of Swans clash
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he is hoping Diego Costa will train at Cobham on Friday evening
Jose Mourinho says he expects Diego Costa to train with his Chelsea team-mates on Friday afternoon, but the Chelsea manager is unsure whether the striker will face Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
The Blues striker missed their 1-0 defeat by Fiorentina in their final pre-season friendly in west London on Wednesday night due to a re-occurrence of his hamstring problem.
Costa was also absent for their 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield last weekend, too, with back-up strikers Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao deputising for the injured Spaniard.
While Mourinho revealed that he was unsure whether Costa would be ready to face the Swans in his media conference on Wednesday night, and the Chelsea manager was still unable to update assembled press ahead of training at Cobham on Friday.
“I think he is going to train with the team – that is what I think. His reaction after that and his decision to be confident to play is another story,” Mourinho said at his media conference this afternoon.
“I have Remy and Falcao, and I go with them like I did in other matches, and like last season with Remy and Drogba.
Mourinho added: “He is a top striker and he is such an important player for us not just because of the goal he scores but his football and the mentality he creates in the team.”
Asked if he was concerned by Costa’s constant niggles, Mourinho continued:
“There is nobody to blame – that is very important. I can’t blame the player because he works hard, and harder than before. The medical department I completely trust in them. I am calm and positive and believe he will be with us for many, many matches.
“When he is ready, he makes a real difference.”
