Mourinho gives latest Chelsea injury update after Swansea draw
Jose Mourinho says he was happy with Diego Costa's fitness levels during Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Swansea
Jose Mourinho insisted that Diego Costa was “very happy” with his fitness levels after he played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City on Saturday.
The Spain international has been dogged by a hamstring injury in the build-up to the new season but managed to play the whole game as Mourinho’s men were held to a draw by the battling Swans at Stamford Bridge.
Costa missed the closing stages of Chelsea’s title winning campaign last season with a hamstring injury.
But Chelsea boss Mourinho revealed that he is content with how the striker’s fitness has been improving in recent days.
Speaking at his post-match news conference at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, Mourinho said: “He did very well, and again the second half is very difficult because it was a big difference, one player less and a lot of effort and even so I was not expecting him to resist for 90 minutes.
“It was very important and new for us that he played for 90 minutes with such a physical performance. He is happy with the reaction. He is OK, happy, he is very happy and with the reaction with his body after such a hard game.”
Costa was Chelsea’s top scorer last season after netting 20 Premier League goals.
Defending champions Chelsea, who also won the League Cup last season, travel to Manchester City in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.
