Neville, Carragher and more: Twitter reacts as Arsenal beat Newcastle
Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both tweet their thoughts as Arsenal beat 10-man Newcastle United 1-0
Arsenal moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory over 10-man Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deflected shot in the 52nd minute was all that separated the two teams after Newcastle were reduced to 10 men when Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off early on for a dangerous challenge on Francis Coquelin.
The Gunners had a number of chances to add to their opener but failed to find away past Tim Krul.
The game prompted plenty of activity on Twitter, and here are some of our favourite updates from during the match.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville claims that Arsenal should have had a penalty when Aaron Ramsey was brought down in the box:
How's that not a Penalty! Can the ref see?
— Gary Neville (@GNev2) August 29, 2015
It's whether the ref was blocked
— Gary Neville (@GNev2) August 29, 2015
Dietmar Hamann is not impressed by Andre Marriner’s decision to send off Mitrovic:
Red card for Mitrovic very harsh. Clumsy challenge but booking would have been enough.
— Didi Hamann (@DietmarHamann) August 29, 2015
Jamie Carragher responds to Neville’s point:
@GNev2 You wouldn't have been happy going off for that!
— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) August 29, 2015
And Rio Ferdinand agrees:
That last tackle by thauvin was worse than the red card challenge…

Rodney Marsh chimes in after the sending off:
If you want to know what players think just take a look at Cazorla's face as ref gives Mitrovic red !!!
— Rodney Marsh (@RodneyMarsh10) August 29, 2015
Mario Melchiot has his say on the decision:
Mitrovic looks like a bit of a hot head. 2 yellows and a red in his first 4 games at #NUFC #mmlove

Arsenal shareholder Piers Morgan is his old self again:
So bored of hearing what 'pretty' football Arsenal play. I want ruthless, not pretty. #afc
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 29, 2015
But he is quick to change his tune:
BOOOOM! 0-1. Finally. #Ox #afc
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 29, 2015
Ferdinand has his say on the Gunners’ opener:
Goal!! Ramsay through the middle with freedom is so much more of a goal threat for arsenal. I'd work it so he plays there always.
— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) August 29, 2015
Andy Cole chimes in:
Killer blow for @NUFC there.. Difficult to come back now with 10 men!
— Andrew Cole (@vancole9) August 29, 2015
And that just leaves Morgan to have the final say on Arsenal’s transfer business:
I'd like a centre-forward who spends more time on training than hair-and-beauty treatments. #afc
