Paul Merson: Why Arsenal will beat Newcastle on Saturday
Paul Merson fancies Arsenal to edge to victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon
Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to return to winning ways in the Premier League and beat Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime.
The Gunners head up north to take on the Magpies in the wake of their goalless draw with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
Arsenal have endured a stuttering start to the new season and have only recorded one win from their opening three Premier League games in a campaign where many were backing them to challenge for the title.
However, former Gunners midfielder Merson feels that Arsene Wenger’s men will have just enough to beat Newcastle believes that the visitors are well-placed to record a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Arsenal have got injury problems and Newcastle will have a right go at them. It’s another must-win for the Gunners.
“I’m going for a 2-1 win to Arsenal but it will be a hard game without Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
“Olivier Giroud did not get the service the other night and Liverpool played against his strengths. When Arsenal got the ball in the box it was down low, he’s good with his head. I think they do need a forward before the window closes.
“Newcastle will be alright, I like Steve McClaren and he’ll bring some form of stability, but not overnight.”
Arsenal will face Bayern Munich, Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League group stage after Thursday’s draw in Monaco.
The Gunners have taken four points from their opening three top-flight games.
