Paul Merson: Why Man United signing Bastian Schweinsteiger could struggle
Arsenal legend Paul Merson questions whether Bastian Schweinsteiger is cut for the Premier League
Manchester United signing Bastian Schweinsteiger could struggle in the Premier League this season, according to Paul Merson.
The Germany international completed a reported £15m move to Old Trafford from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich last month.
I’ve seen a lot of players come over and struggle to adapt to the league
United manager Louis van Gaal confirmed that Schweinsteiger is unlikely to feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday due to fitness issues.
And Arsenal legend Merson suggested that the 31-year-old midfielder could struggle to adapt to the English top-flight after 13 years in Germany.
“I have concerns whether their new signings will have had time to gel before the start of the season.
“You never know, Bastian Schweinsteiger may struggle to make the transition to the Premier League – after all, it is a lot different to having 85 per cent possession like Bayern Munich have been known to have in the Bundesliga.
“The Premier League is hustle and bustle where you have a dominant game yet only have 65 per cent possession. I’ve seen a lot of players come over and struggle to adapt to the league, but I’ll save my judgement on United’s signings until we’re well into the season.”
Schweinsteiger scored 67 goals in 500 appearances for Bayern in a career spanning 13 years at Allianz Arena.
The Germany international won eight Bundesliga titles, the Champions League and six German Cups during that spell.
The United signing is expected to miss their clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday.
