Paul Merson: Why unimpressive Man United won’t beat Aston Villa
Arsenal legend Paul Merson says unimpressive Manchester United won't beat Aston Villa on Friday night
Paul Merson is tipping Manchester United to drop points in what should be a closely-fought clash against Aston Villa on Friday night.
The Red Devils eased to an opening day win against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford last weekend after a Kyle Walker own goal sealed a 1-0 win for the Red Devils.
I see this one being nervy and tight at Villa Park, with the hosts to score first and United to equalise
Aston Villa, meanwhile, also notched up a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Bournemouth after Rudy Gestede powered a header past Cheers goalkeeper Artur Boruc at Dean Court.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson reckons Sherwood’s Villa side have enough about them to secure a point against United at Villa Park this evening.
Merson told Sky Sports: “I was not that impressed with Man United in the win against Spurs, and Villa got a good result in a difficult fixture at Bournemouth. I’m going to go for a draw.
“It’s 20 years since Villa beat United at home, and United have a hold over them. I remember being 2-0 up with 13 minutes to go against United – and we still managed to lose.
“I like Villa’s new signing Rudy Gestede, he’s a good player and looks a good replacement for Christian Benteke; Tim should start him if he’s fit. But I see this one being nervy and tight at Villa Park, with the hosts to score first and United to equalise.”
The Red Devils have spent over £80m in the summer transfer window on new signings in a bid to catch Premier League champions Chelsea.
Louis van Gaal has added Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian and Sergio Romero to his squad in the past couple of months.
