Per Mertesacker: Petr Cech has given Arsenal huge boost
Arsenal centre-half Per Mertesacker discusses the impact of Petr Cech at The Emirates after their Community Shield win
Per Mertesacker says Petr Cech has given Arsenal a huge boost after the Gunners beat Chelsea to win the Community Shield on Sunday.
The Czech Republic international made his competitive debut for Arsenal at Wembley after he completed an £11m move to the north London side from Chelsea earlier this month.
His contribution is massive
Cech was forced to make two saves during the season’s curtain-raiser as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored what proved to be a 25th-minute winner.
And Mertesacker, who started the day as captain of the Gunners, spoke about Cech’s impact at Emirates Stadium following his move across London.
“He has so much experience. He gives us a huge boost before the season,” Mertesacker told BT Sport.
“His contribution is massive. Let’s not expect too much. He hasn’t played for a year.”
Chelsea had chances to beat their former goalkeeper but Ramires screwed a header wide, whilst Eden Hazard fired over the crossbar with only Cech to beat in the second half.
Arsenal face West Ham United at The Emirates in their opening Premier League game of the season next weekend.
