Memphis Depay and Wayne Rooney both took to social media to express their delight at helping Manchester United thrash Club Brugge 4-0 to book the Red Devils’ place in the Champions League group stage.

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick to dispel his critics, Ander Herrera added a fourth before Javier Hernandez slipped at the crucial moment, dragging his penalty wide.

The victory completed a resounding 7-1 aggregate win and ensured United’s spot in the group stage draw of the Champions League on Thursday afternoon.

Depay was quick to use his Instagram account to send his congratulations to Rooney following the emphatic victory.

He posted the picture above on the photo-sharing app and wrote: “That’s how it’s done lads. Congrats with your 3 goals @WayneRooney💪 #GGMU #MUFC”

Red Devils skipper Rooney, meanwhile, shared the photo below and wrote: “Great performance from the team tonight @manchesterunited. Important now to take that into the Premier League on Sunday ⚽️👍”
