Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is all smiles despite concerns surrounding his form ahead of Club Brugge clash

Wayne Rooney didn’t appear to be bothered by recent criticism directed at the Manchester United captain as the Red Devils squad trained ahead of their Champions League return on Monday afternoon.

Louis van Gaal’s side face Belgian champions Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Rooney has failed to find the net in his opening two Premier League games of the season, and his performance in a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa earned particular criticism in the media.

However, United manager Van Gaal has come out in defence of the England international, who scored 12 goals in 30 Premier League appearances in his first season playing under the Dutchman.

Marcos Rojo, who was part of the Argentina squad that reached the Copa America final this summer, was also snapped in training as the United centre-half works on his fitness.

Meanwhile, Tottenham target Javier Hernandez was all smiles despite his limited first-team action so far this term.
