Stan Collymore: Reported Tottenham target perfect for Arsenal
Stan Collymore feels that Victor Wanyama would be a good signing for Arsenal this summer
Stan Collymore believes that Southampton’s Victor Wanyama would be a perfect signing for Arsenal before transfer deadline day.
Wanyama has been touted as a possible target for Arsenal’s local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bolster his squad at White Hart Lane.
However, former Liverpool man Collymore feels that the 24-year-old Kenya international would be a perfect fit for Arsenal as Arsene Wenger looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season.
Collymore wrote in his column for the Daily Mirror: “If I were a top-four manager looking for that one last, quality signing of the transfer window then the player I would be trying to get my hands on is Southampton’s Victor Wanyama.
“Tottenham are the only club to have been linked with the Kenyan’s signature but, to my mind, he is exactly the sort of player Arsenal need.
“It’s a big ask for Francis Coquelin to step up over 38 Premier League games and Wanyama, who wants away, would complement him well.
“I’m a big fan from his Celtic days – he’s big and strong, and can get forward, too.”
The Premier League transfer deadline closes at 18:00 BST on Tuesday.
Arsenal moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Spurs, meanwhile, continued their stuttering start to the season with a goalless draw against Everton at White Hart Lane to leave the Lilywhites in 15th place.
