Stoke 0 Liverpool 1: Jordan Henderson hails Philippe Coutinho winner
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says Philippe Coutinho scores goals like his winner at Stoke in training daily
Jordan Henderson heaped praise on Philippe Coutinho after the Liverpool midfielder scored a brilliant late winner against Stoke City.
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson had Stoke’s best chance to beat Simon Mignolet in the first half, whilst new Reds signing Christian Benteke had an effort blocked after half-time.
It was a fantastic finish. He does that every day in training
But Coutinho, who scored the club’s goal of the season against Southampton last year, fired a brilliant long-range strike past Jack Butland with four minutes remaining.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the 1-0 win, Henderson insisted he had faith in Liverpool’s attacking players to create a big of magic to score the winner.
“We knew it would be difficult,” Henderson said.
“We worked really well through pre-season. We showed resilience and Philippe with a big of magic to get the win.”
Coutinho has scored 13 goals in two-and-a-half seasons in the Premier League since his £8.5m move to Liverpool from Inter Milan in January 2013.
And Liverpool captain Henderson added that he wasn’t surprised to see Coutinho successfully dispatch his attempt.
“I was behind it. I knew as soon as he shifted it onto his right he was going to make the goalkeeper work. It was a fantastic finish. He does that every day in training,” Henderson added.
The 23-year-old scored five times in 35 Premier League games last season.
Coutinho was named the club’s player of the season for his performances in 2014/15 campaign.
