Stoke 0 Liverpool 1: Player ratings as Philippe Coutinho nets winner

Player ratings as Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho scores a late winner to seal victory over Stoke City

Stoke City

Jack Butland Had to make a couple of saves in the first half to keep the game at 0-0. Made a fantastic save in the second half to deny Skrtel. Nothing he could do for the Coutinho goal. However, he did get a slight hand to it. 7/10

Glen Johnson Had a chance to open the scoring in the first half but his shot went over the bar. Kept pressing forward throughout the game for his new side. 6

Geoff Cameron Made good runs to stop Liverpool from scoring. Without the defender, Stoke could have easily lost 3-0. 6

Marc Muniesa Kept his defence solid and dispossessed Liverpool when the visitors were going forward much to the delight of The Britannia roar. The ex-Barcelona player is certainly a fan’s favourite. 7

Erik Pieters Subbed at half-time due to illness. Did not have an impact in the first half. 5

Marco Van Ginkel Made a good couple of chances in the first half. Went missing for the rest of the game. 6

Glenn Whelan Another fan’s favourite. Denied Liverpool many times in the second half. The midfielder was not to blame for the conceded goal. 6

Jonathan Walters With talk of a new contract on his mind, Walters was not the same player who was in the team that beat Liverpool 6-1 in the last game of last season. 5

Charlie Adam Had a few shots on target but has not been able to hit the target. Adam has done well in midfield and is showing how to control the pace of the game before being subbed in the second half. 6

Ibrahim Afellay The midfielder was not on top form today and could not match Liverpool’s strength in midfield. 5

Mame Biram Diouf He missed two good chances in the second half to put his side 1-0 up. Otherwise, his presence that challenged Liverpool’s defence in a tightly contested game. 7

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet More assertive in the second half compared to the first. Made much-needed saves to deny Diouf. Did enough to keep a clean sheet. 6

Nathaniel Clyne The new Liverpool right-back provided some sublime crosses into the box for his new club. Found no-one to connect with them. Made a error in the second half which he luckily got away with in his own penalty box. 6

Martin Skrtel Marked Diuof well throughout the game and he didn’t allow the striker to have any space in the penalty area. 6

Dejan Lovren Has improved since the end of last season and shows how hard he has worked in pre season. Took a chance on goal but Butland was equal to his effort. 5

Joe Gomez The youngster played well but came up against tough challenges against an experienced Stoke side. Wonderful assist for the Coutinho strike. 6

James Milner Booked for an unnecessary challenge on Adam. Seemed to disappear in the second half. Did improve slightly more towards the end of the game. His cross was cleared by the Stoke defence. 4

Jordan Henderson The former Sunderland man did well in his new role as captain as he made good decisions in the midfield and kept his team playing well together. 7

Jordon Ibe He has proved how much he has developed from last season. Looks an impressive prospect for the season ahead. 6

Phillip Coutinho (Man of the match) Took no risks throughout the game and kept possession of the ball. He hit a fantastic strike in the 86th minute into the top left corner over new no.1 keeper Butland. Could easily be a early contender for goal of the season. 8

Adam Lallana Lallana made some remarkable defensive strategies before his substitution in the second half for Can. Seemed an unusual switch with Lallana playing well. 6

Christian Benteke Long passes were made by Liverpool to their new starlet striker. Benteke did not offer Liverpool what he is capable of in terms of corners and free-kicks. 5
