Thierry Henry: Why Man United can challenge Chelsea for the title
Thierry Henry says Manchester United could mount a serious challenge for this season's Premier League title
Thierry Henry believes that Manchester United are capable of challenging Chelsea for the Premier League title this season – as long as the Red Devils’ new signings can adapt quickly to English football.
Louis van Gaal has been one of the top flight’s most active managers during the summer transfer window, bringing in five new players as he looks to transform his side into title contenders.
United have signed Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sergio Romero this summer, and have also been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona forward Pedro in recent days.
Former Arsenal striker Henry feels that United are capable of pushing for the title – but says it will all depend on how quickly their new recruits adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.
“I do believe that if Man United manage to make those guys gel early and not lose points too early [they can win the title],” said Henry, speaking at the launch of The Sun Dream Team in London on Tuesday night.
“But they have a lot of guys arriving in the team and it’s not always easy to adapt to a new system.
“The team to beat is Chelsea. If they do what they did last year, with the consistency they had… put it this way, if you lose more than two games you’re usually not the champions.
“Chelsea are the team to beat, they have the title and will start to defend it on Saturday.”
Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, before Chelsea host Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.
