Three players Arsenal could sign instead of Karim Benzema

Shona Duthie looks at three players Arsenal could sign instead of Karim Benzema

Alexandre Lacazette

Last season, Alexandre Lacazette was on fire last season for Lyon. He finished as the league’s top goal-scorer as well as the club’s. This is nothing short of incredible from the 24-year-old. He has an abundance of talent and has the potential to develop his game even further. It has been reported that Lyon are unwilling to sell their star player for anything less than £40m. With his young age and talent, he could be an investment for the future. Karim Benzema is three years older than Lacazette and a deal could see him playing at the Emirates for years to come. Arsene Wenger is known to like to take more inexperienced players and moulding them into great players. He is the least experience out of available strikers but he could reap the biggest rewards for the club. Benzema has been estimated at £48m, signing Lacazette could see Arsenal saving £8m on a summer transfer.

Saido Berahino

Berahino under new manager Tony Pulis at the end of last season completely shone through as he had a break through in terms of goals. It has been reported that Berahino wants to leave West Brom for a chance to improve his game and his career. The forward can easily develop under Wenger. Every player wants a chance to play for a team who is playing in Champions League football. Only 22, his best is yet to come and he could also be one for the future. The player has been estimated at £22m. Although Arsenal are in need of a striker who can score them over 20 goals-a-season, Berahino was not far off as he scored as he scored 20 goals in the Premier League and the FA Cup. Stats like this can easily improve and as he is an English international, Wenger likes to add English youth to his squad. Arsenal would have to fight off their London rivals Tottenham for the signature of the player. Again, he could be an investment for the future.

Gonzalo Higuain

He has been linked with Arsenal once before and could easily come back into Arsene Wenger’s sights again before the end of the summer transfer window. He is an experience striker, proven and reliable all three skills and characteristic that Arsenal need to be looking for. Lack of Champions League football and the departure of Rafael Benitez to Real Madrid has seen the player wanting an exit from Napoli. His asking price may be slightly steep at £40m but with this Wenger and The Gunners will be getting a striker that can boost their chances significantly. It seems more likely that Higuian will leave Napoli than Benzema would leave Real Madrid. Fans and neutrals have expressed that this is a department that Arsenal needs to add to. Higuian is a top quality striker that the Arsenal fans have been waiting for
