Three midfielders Chelsea should target before transfer window shuts
Eve Langford takes a look at three midfielders Chelsea could sign before the summer transfer window shuts
Nemanja Matic and Eden Hazard were both named in the PFA’s Premier League team of the year at the end of last season, achievements which will make it very hard for potential newcomers to the Chelsea squad to break into the first-team. A player who might have the potential to do just that is Charles Aranguiz. After proving his worth for Chile in the Copa America, Aranguiz has become hot property on the transfer market. At 26, Aranguiz isn’t going to want to join a European club only to keep the bench warm. He displayed his versatility and desire whilst playing for his national side and could prove a pivotal player for the club that manages to sign him. With a reputed passing game and the memory of silverware fresh in his mind Aranguiz would be a great asset to a recently humbled and dejected Chelsea.
Following the departure of Filipe Luis after one season at the club and the goalkeeper-who-must-not-be-named heading over to Arsenal, Chelsea need a big signing this summer to raise morale. Paul Pogba has been the name on everybody’s lips during this transfer window. Juventus director, Giuseppe Marotta, has admitted he will be powerless to stop Pogba’s departure if the midfielder is offer a ‘crazy salary’. Pogba would come to Chelsea with a brace of titles and trophies, not least being named the young player of the World Cup in 2014. He is dynamic in both attack and defence and makes a strong goal scoring contribution. Securing Pogba over the heads of Manchester City and Barcelona would be a huge coup and his inclusion in the team would arguably provide Chelsea with the most formidable midfield in Europe.
Antonio Cuadrado may have been given the number 11 shirt for the time being but rumours abound that the Colombian may soon be out of the door at Chelsea and Mourinho will be in the market for a new winger once more. After what was deemed to be a poor performance by the Chelsea midfield in their recent Community Shield loss to Arsenal, it may be a winger with some striking ability that Mourinho decides to pursue. Candreva helped his team, Lazio, to Champions League qualification last season with his diverse style of play and an excellent record of 11 goals and nine assists. The Italy international is said to be disappointed at being overlooked for the captaincy of his team this season and might be looking for a bigger and better opportunity elsewhere.
