Three players Arsenal must sign before summer window shuts

Shona Duthie suggests three players Arsenal should sign before the close of the summer transfer window

Lars Bender

Arsenal only need to strengthen in certain areas and the Gunners fans have been patiently waiting for them to sign a defensive midfielder. Francis Coquelin has been the surprise package for Arsenal coming towards the end of last season. However, there only replacement in that position is Mikel Areta. If Coquelin was to get injured or even suspended, as reliable as Arteta is, he is getting older. Arsenal have the desire to push on for the Premier League title this season and in order to do so, they need to buy a defensive midfielder. Lars Bender could easily fit into that role. With Bayer Leverkusen, Bender demonstrated he could read the game and help with defensive decisions. His main skill is tackling, and it is nothing short of spectacular. Arsenal would face competition from their north London rival Tottenham for his signature. However, with Bender being one of the main reasons as to why his side finished with the second best defensive record in the league last season, Arsenal should pay their attention and sign the 26-year-old before the window shuts.

Robert Lewandowski

It has been reported that Arsene Wenger is a big admirer of the Polish international and has targeted a big move to bolster his front line. A signing of this calibre would certainty make Arsenal fans drool at the prospect of the forward wearing an Arsenal shirt. Lewandowski would certainly help them in the stakes to claim the Premier League title. Wenger knows that he needs a more dominant forward that produce over 20 goals-a-season. Arsenal should be keen to bolster their frontline this summer and time is running out to get a player of exceptional talent. Lewandowski has fallen short of managers Pep Guardiola’s plans and his approach does not suit his style of play. At Borussia Dortmund, Lewandowski was a force to be reckoned with and that is what Arsenal needs in their penalty box.

Neven Subotic

Another area Arsenal could slightly improve on is their centre halves. Neven Subotic could be future replacement for the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Subotic has improved his game at Dortmund over the past couple of seasons and could be a fantastic squad player for Arsenal. Defending is one of his strong points, he likes to track back and defend the danger area. He has a strong presence in the defence and could help the like of Callum Chambers develop his game in the centre half role. It has been reported that Subotic would like a move to England for a chance to play Premier League football. Arsenal are only a few players short of becoming a team that many fear and title contenders. If they were to add Subotic to the mix they would become just that.
