Three players Man United should sign instead of Pedro
Ned Bristow examines three players Manchester United should sign instead of Pedro Rodriguez
1) Gareth Bale
The Welshman has once again been subject to boos at The Bernabeu this week, and his patience could well be wearing thin. Seemingly comfortable in Madrid despite a difficult 2014/15 campaign, many believe the former Spurs and Southampton star is ready for a move back to Britain after two seasons in La Liga. Should he return, Old Trafford seems the most popular destination for the 26-year-old, who scored the winner in Real’s 2014 Champions League triumph. United fans have been quick to complain about a lack of pace going forward this season following the high-profile departure of Angel di Maria, and were keen to see Pedro come in and bring balance to Memphis’ speed on the left wing. With the Barcelona man seemingly on the brink of joining champions Chelsea, Bale would go far to appease the doubts that United have the attacking prowess to challenge at the top. A bid for Bale would, however, break the bank; his rumoured price tag is near the £100m mark – £80m more than fee the Blues have agreed with Barca for Pedro. But Bale has proven he can be brutally effective in the Premier League, and it is widely agreed that United need another marquee signing to turn their Champions League hopefuls back into title challengers.
2) Marco Reus
Lots has changed at Borussia Dortmund since their heroic, valiant 2013 Champions League crusade; many of the key stars have moved on, and Jurgen Klopp ended his emotional seven year association with the club after finishing seventh last season, despite languishing near the foot of the table for much of the early stages. Now vice-captain, Marco Reus has been heavily linked with a move away from the club since that defining Wembley defeat to rivals Bayern Munich two seasons ago. Like Bale, he would help bring the pace United fans are so craving this campaign and, while speculation was rife that the 26-year-old was on his way to Old Trafford at the back end of last season, a move remains on the cards. Louis van Gaal is clearly in the market for an exciting attacking threat in the mould of Reus, who could also offer versatility and a myriad of options across the front four.
3) Kevin de Bruyne
Strongly linked with fierce rivals Manchester City, United could turn their attentions towards the former Chelsea man after their move for Pedro came to nothing. Kevin De Bruyne has become a fans’ favourite at Wolfsburg since his move in 2014, and has publicly stated that, while he would like to prove himself in England, he would not force his club to sell him. City have been said to have bid between £45m and £50m for the Belgian’s services, but United could easily match Wolfsburg’s valuation of £50m+ should he pique their interest. Exciting and quick on the ball, De Bruyne is another attacking outlet United could benefit from as he looks to get involved in every passage of play and shift defence to attack with sharp counter attacking movements. Certainly, to leave behind the early season reputation of dreary 1-0s, United would be looking for exactly this sort of option.
