Three reasons Kevin de Bruyne should join Man United ahead of Man City

Tom Phillips examines three reasons why Kevin De Bruyne should join Manchester United ahead of Manchester City

Guaranteed starter

Kevin De Bruyne has been in sensational form for VfL Wolfsburg since his move from Chelsea. De Bruyne has featured for the German outfit 72 times, scoring 20 times. His reason for moving from Stamford Bridge was simple: he wanted to play games. He was hoping to be a guaranteed starter for Jose Mourinho’s side but the manager had other plans for him, causing De Bruyne submit a transfer request. De Bruyne will suffer the same fate at Manchestrer City, too. Manuel Pellegrini has David Silva, Yaya Toure, Raheem Sterling, Jesus Navas and Samir Nasri as attacking support for Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony – De Bruyne will not be a regular feature and will cause de ja vu for the Belgian international. At United, he will be guaranteed a place after Angel Di Maria left and amid reports Louis van Gaal is looking to ship Adnan Januzaj on loan for the season to improve his development. United are currently lacking depth in terms of players capable of playing in a No10 role – a position that De Bruyne loves to play in. He will slot perfectly into the starting XI for United alongside Wayne Rooney.

Perfect fit for Rooney

With Rooney looking set to be the Red Devils’s main striker for the season and beyond, he will need the perfect team-mate to fit his style of play if he is to be the 25-goal-a-season striker that Van Gaal is crying out to see from his United squad. De Bruyne’s style of play will be a good fit for Van Gaal’s philosophy and will be the key piece in the puzzle that is United’s attack. As it stands, Memphis Depay has been in good form but the likes of Januzaj, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini have featured as attacking options but have failed to help Rooney become a dangerous threat to their opposition’s defence. De Bruyne featuring in the United side will eliminate the criticism that has been set on Rooney so far this season and help the captain for United flourish.

Deserves to shine at a big club

There is no doubt that Manchester United and Manchester City are two of the biggest names in English football and De Bruyne deserves to shine at a big club that is stable at the highest possible level. Having had a disappointing spell at Chelsea that finished sourly for the Belgian, he will be wanting to prove himself even more on the big stage and will want to be part of a club that will give him the opportunities and be part of the team’s `spine` if you will. This is why he would be great at United. As it stands, United are in need of a player of De Bruyne’s ability and determination in order for them to remain a top-four club since the small blip they had with David Moyes as manager whilst City currently have the options in attack that already make them title challengers.
