Three reasons why Chelsea will regret selling Petr Cech to Arsenal

Shona Duthie looks at three reasons why Chelsea will live to regret the sale of Petr Cech to Arsenal

Arsenal now title contenders

Arsenal fans will admit that they have not had a top-class goalkeeper since Invincible legend Lens Lehman. David Ospina impressed last season as he kept eight clean sheets after manager Arsene Wenger dropped Wojcech Szczesny. But that record is nothing compared to Petr Cech’s 220 clean sheets for Chelsea in all competitions. The 33-year-old is still in his prime and can lead Arsenal to greatness. John Terry has already commented that Cech could save Arsenal up to 15 points this season. If you do the maths, the Gunners finished 12 points behind Chelsea last season. This could mean that the north London side are a cert to be title contenders and challenge Chelsea for the Premier League trophy. With their new recruit, anything is possible – and it could leave Chelsea reeling come the end of the season.

His record

As mentioned above, Cech kept 222 clean sheets for Chelsea during his 11-year stay. Cech’s credentials are nothing short of amazing. Since August 2013, in 41 appearances, he has a record of a save every 56th minute. He has accumulated 66 successful saves as well as 67 successful catches. This, however, includes last season where he was no2 to Thibaut Courtois. Stats like show how Cech’s style and how he is great addition and asset to Arsenal. Cech is an excellent shot stopper. Chelsea did not want to let Cech go to a London rival. It was the Czech international who expressed his wish to stay in London. If Cech can produce the his Chelsea performance for the Gunners this term, the Blues will be left to regret the sale.

Gives Arsenal confidence

Arsenal’s defence grew in confidence last season when Ospina took over. Fans in the Premier League could see that Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal all gelled really well with the Colombian behind them. Ospina commanded his defence and Cech does the exact same. Arsenal lacked a lot of confidence over the years and this has led to lost points in the title race. However, Cech provides experience in abundance. The defence will feel a lot more secure with Cech barking out the orders.
