Three reasons why Man United must sign Pedro Rodriguez

Tom Phillips explains why Manchester United should be going all out to try and sign Pedro Rodriguez from Barcelona

They need a creative winger

With Angel Di Maria leaving for PSG, Manchester United’s options on the wing are limited to Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, which is why they need to sign Pedro Rodriguez. With Juan Mata naturally a number 10-esque player and Memphis Depay looking more likely to be Louis van Gaal’s ‘secret striker’, United are seriously lacking a world-class winger in their squad. As it stands, Young is arguably their most competent winger but with only five assists last season, they need a winger who can create more chances. Pedro has made over 20 assists in the past two seasons for Barcelona in comparison to Young’s 11 for United, Pedro is renowned for being a creative attacking midfield and has been applauded for his creativity in the past for both Barcelona and Spain – winning major competitions in the process. The signing of Pedro for United would provide an added advantage for them when it comes to Champions League football returning to Old Trafford, too. United are in desperate need to improve their squad depth in order to be competitive in both domestic and European football once again, in order for that to happen Pedro is their answer to that problem.

They need goals from players apart from Rooney

As Wayne Rooney looks set to be the main striker for the Red Devils, they need to learn from lessons under Sir Alex Ferguson – Rooney may score 20+ goals as a striker, but he cannot bring the silverware in by himself. Twice Rooney has scored more than 20 goals in a season and both times United failed to deliver on silverware (apart from a Community Shield). Pedro has been a real threat in front of goal, as well as assisting the likes of Messi, Sanchez, Suarez and Neymar. Since being a first-team regular in 2009, during his time at the Nou Camp. Pedro has scored at least 10 goals in all competitions every season, his highest return being 23 goals. He also has a knack for scoring winning goals on the big stage too. Pedro has scored the winning goal in the European Super Cup in the last two season now, both in extra-time, a sort of player with that will and determination is something That eye for goal along with his creativity on the wing will greatly boost United’s goalscoring options greatly and not rely on just one striker such as Rooney to score goals van Gaal desperately needs in his squad.

He will suit LVG’s philosophy more than Di Maria

Despite creating more goals than any other United player with 12 assists last season, Di Maria seriously struggled to get to grips with Van Gaal’s philosophy at Old Trafford. The Argentine failed to produce the form that saw him win the hearts of the Bernabeu faithful whilst at Real Madrid, only finding the net four times and getting sent off in the FA Cup at home against eventual winners Arsenal. Pedro however, will be a far more suitable player to gel into Van Gaal’s football philosophy. The Spaniard has a better goal-scoring tally, with 99 goals in his career to Di Maria’s 61 and has a better disciplinary record, having never been sent off, while Di Maria has been sent to the stands six times in his career. On paper, he would be a far better player to fit in Van Gaal’s football philosophy in comparison to Di Maria.
