Three reasons why Man United should sign Nicolas Otamendi
Tom Phillips examines three reasons why Manchester United should sign Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi
Can perform on the big stage
Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi has been a major player when it comes to important matches against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. And when these matches arise, Otamendi is not out of depth despite facing the the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. His experience on the biggest stage far outweigh the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who have struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Having a defender such as Otamendi will be a significant boost for Manchester United, particularly with Champions League football fast approaching.
Since Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left United last summer, the club have failed to find a suitable replacement in the heart of their defence with the likes of Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair given the chance by manager Louis van Gaal in the quest to find a stable and commanding centre-half. Otamendi has demonstrated his presence at the back since his Porto days. His time in Portugal saw him win the Europa League, Primeira Liga and even the Uefa Super Cup in three years. His attributes have also continued in his international career as he helped Argentina guide to Copa America final this year in Chile.
Impressive defensive record
Otamendi played a major part in Los Che’s impressive defensive record last season. In La Liga alone, Valencia conceded just 32 goals, which is six less than Real Madrid’s tally. As well as this, Otamendi helped to limit Valencia to just five losses in a season that saw Los Che beat the likes of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, both of whom finished above Valencia last season. The centre-half played a key role.
