Three reasons why Tottenham should sign Sven Bender

Shona Duthie examines three reasons why Tottenham Hotspur should sign Dortmund star Sven Bender

Bender has experience

Tottenham Hotspur are looking for experienced players in order to challenge for silverware next season. Sven Bender certainly fits that bill as he has played in a European Cup final and won domestic championships. The 24-year-old has shown that he is capable of producing mature performances and he has played at the highest level for Germany. Spurs are looking to surpass other teams and enter into the top four. Bender could give them a nudge in the right direction. Spurs fans have longed to see their team play in the Champions League, and Bender has had experience in that competition as well as challenging for titles and winning cups.

He wants first-team football

Since the exit of fan favourite manager Jurgen Klopp, Bender has failed to connect as well with new manager Thomas Tuchel. Klopp liked his players stubborn and to have a physical style of play. Tuchel prefers more technical football and quick speed. Bender has not fitted into the manger’s new plans and is looking to play more first-team football. Spurs can certainly give him what he wants as they desperately need a new central midfield player if they are to challenge for the top four next season. Spurs should make the most of the fact that Bender may not fit into Tuchel’s plans for the coming season. Bender was left on the substitute’s bench for Borussia Dortmund’s Europa League game against Wolfsberger on Thursday. He will, however, come at a cost. Spurs may need to spend big in order to get their man for the holding midfield position.

Premier League player

A problem for many players when they first move to the Premier League is the physical nature of the league. Can they produce the same performance in the Premier League as they have previously done in Europe? This should be no problem for Bender. Firstly, Bender plays with a physical nature. He is quick on the ball, tall and will cause problems to any other team with his aerial presence. He could easily slot into any Premier League team. He has not only the experience, but also the mentality to succeed. Being only 24, he has already competed in major championship games and has never looked out of his depth. Tottenham need a ready-made player to slot into their defence problems. Bender could be the answer to their problems.
