Vurnon Anita: Why Man United signing Memphis Depay will struggle this season
Newcastle midfielder Vurnon Anita warns Man United signing Memphis Depay it will take a while to adapt to Premier League
Vurnon Anita has tipped Manchester United forward Memphis Depay to struggle in his first season in the Premier League.
The Netherlands international is still waiting to score his first United goal after failing to find the net in 1-0 victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
It takes a while to adapt as any player coming in from another country will tell you
However, Depay, who moved to United in a £25m deal from PSV Eindhoven earlier this summer, scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
But Newcastle United midfielder Anita, who is also part of the Netherlands set-up, warned Depay that it takes a while to adapt to the Premier League.
“It’s different for each player, but I’ve been here for three seasons now and it took time to settle in,” Anita is quoted as saying by The Mirror.
“It’s a big difference from the Dutch league in terms of the pace and the physicality but I feel at home now both on and off the pitch.
“It takes a while to adapt as any player coming in from another country will tell you.”
Depay scored 22 goals in 28 Eredivisie appearances for Dutch champions PSV last season.
The Dutch winger played under United manager Louis van Gaal during Netherlands’s World Cup campaign in 2014.
United are looking to record their third successive victory in the Premier League against Newcastle on Saturday.
