Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge gives an update on his fitness on his Instagram page on Wednesday

Daniel Sturridge has handed Liverpool with a timely boost ahead of the start of the Premier League season after he stepped up his return from training on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old endured a forgettable 2014/15 campaign after Sturridge was limited to just 12 Premier League appearances in an injury-hit season.

The England international, who could only manage four league strikes last season, underwent an operation to solve a troublesome hip problem in May.

Sturridge has been recovering from the procedure stateside, and the Liverpool striker looked to be picking up his pace in his most recent Instagram post.

The Liverpool forward wrote on the photo-sharing app: “Closer …”

Sturridge scored 21 goals in 29 appearances as the England striker and Luis Suarez fired the Reds to within four points of Premier League glory.

The former Manchester City man has netted 35 times in 55 league games for Liverpool following his £12m move to Anfield from Chelsea in January 2013.
