Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update after Chelsea win
Arsene Wenger is hoping that Jack Wilshere's ankle injury will only keep him out for a "matter of days"
Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere missed Arsenal’s 1-0 Community Shield victory over Chelsea with an ankle injury sustained in training on Saturday.
The midfielder was left out of the Gunners squad for the Wembley clash after suffering the problem in the build-up to Sunday’s game.
Wilshere has been dogged by ankle problems throughout his Arsenal career and missed most of last season after requiring surgery in the winter.
However, Arsenal boss Wenger insisted that he is hopeful that Wilshere’s latest injury setback is not serious.
Asked about Wilshere’s fitness, Wenger told his post-match news conference at Wembley: “He couldn’t take part in the game today because of an ankle problem he sustained yesterday. It happened at the training ground.
“We don’t think it’s bad at all but I haven’t been told whether it will be two days or five days.
“I don’t know how long he will not be available for. It’s a matter of days.”
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal of the game in the 24th minute at Wembley as he drilled his shot into the top-left corner.
Arsenal, who finished third and won the FA Cup last season, kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against West Ham United next weekend.
