Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update after Liverpool draw
Arsene Wenger delivers updates on Arsenal trio Per Mertesacker, Danny Welbeck and Laurent Koscielny
Arsene Wenger revealed that Per Mertesacker suffered from sickness in the build-up to Arsenal’s goalless draw with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
The German was left out of the squad by the Arsenal manager, with his defensive partner Laurent Koscielny also missing out due to a back problem.
Calum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista filled in at centre half and helped the north London side keep a clean sheet against the Merseyside outfit.
And Wenger explained the duo’s absences during his post-match news conference at Emirates Stadium.
Wenger told his post-match news conference: “Mertesacker is sick. How long will that sickness take? I don’t know.
“Koscielny has a back problem. Having said that, our two centre backs played well in the second half.”
Wenger also delivered an update on Danny Welbeck, who has not featured this season due to a knee injury picked up towards the end of the last campaign.
He added: “After the international break, if all goes well, he can come back.”
Arsenal travel to Newcastle United in their next Premier League game on Saturday afternoon as they look to notch up their second win of the new season.
