Ander Herrera: Man United players must help Wayne Rooney
Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera says the Red Devils are lucky to have England captain Wayne Rooney
Ander Herrera says it is the responsibility of the Manchester United midfielders to help Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney with the workload up front.
The England skipper became the Three Lions’s all-time record goal-scorer with his 50th goal in a 2-0 victory over Switzerland in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday night.
However, United captain Rooney is still waiting for his first goal in the Premier League this season after a subdued start for the 29-year-old centre-forward.
Louis van Gaal signed France teenager Anthony Martial in a £36m deal from Monaco on transfer deadline day in a bid to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.
But United midfielder Herrera isn’t willing to place all the goal-scoring onus on Martial and Rooney, adding that the 20-time English champions are fortunate to have the Three Lions legend.
“We don’t have to give all the responsibility on scoring to Wayne or Anthony Martial,” Herrera is quoted as saying by Four Four Two. “We have to help. It is very important as a midfielder to score. We all have to help.
“Wayne is very important to us. Most of the times he will score but when he doesn’t he is helping the team and he is always fighting for the team.He runs for the rest of the team and he likes to provide assists. We are very lucky to have him.”
Rooney scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off last month.
