Anthony Martial is very modest, says Man United boss Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal is backing Anthony Martial to keep his feet on the ground at Manchester United

Louis van Gaal has described Anthony Martial as “very modest” and says the teenager will not get carried away by his stunning start to life at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old continued his brilliant start to his Red Devils career by scoring his fourth goal in as many games as he came off the bench to net during the 3-0 League Cup win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday night.

United’s decision to part with a big transfer fee to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford from Monaco raised some eyebrows, but the teenager has enjoyed a flying start to life in the Premier League.

However, despite the inevitable hype surrounding the youngster, Van Gaal is backing the striker not to get carried away by his top form.

Van Gaal told his post-match news conference at Old Trafford: “That’s not difficult because he’s a player who is very modest and he knows he can score because of his fellow players.

“We made it very easy for him two times because we won the game and then the gaps are existing and, with his speed and composure, he can score.

“He did it also against Liverpool and now again. We are happy but still we have to keep our feet on the ground.”

United return to Premier League action when they take on Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
