Anthony Martial: Man United paid crazy transfer fee for me
Manchester United signing Anthony Martial insists he doesn't feel under any pressure despite size of transfer fee
Anthony Martial has admitted that Manchester United paid a “crazy” transfer fee for the uncapped France winger.
The teenager completed a £36m move to Old Trafford from Ligue 1 side Monaco on transfer deadline day after having impressed towards the end of the 2015/16 campaign.
Martial has become United’s third most-expensive signing behind £57.1m British-record flop Angel di Maria and £37.1m signing Juan Mata.
And the United signing accepted that the 20-time English champions coughed up an astronomical fee considering his relative inexperience, although he added that he doesn’t feel under pressure.
“I don’t know if I’m worth 80m euros but I don’t worry about the sums,” Martial is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “I’m going there for the football side of things. The price is between the two clubs, I don’t see myself under any pressure other than proving myself on the pitch.
“It’s true it’s a crazy sum for a player of my age but that’s the football market and I can’t change that. It’s between the two clubs. I know not to let myself get distracted and to concentrate on what happens on the pitch.”
The 19-year-old scored eight goals in his last nine appearances for Monaco last season, although the teenager netted just 12 times in 46 appearances in all competitions.
Martial has been likened to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in terms of his playing style, with the France legend also having played for Monaco in the early stages of his career.
