Louis van Gaal has admitted that he has been surprised by Anthony Martial’s stunning start to life at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old, who joined United from Monaco on transfer deadline day earlier this month in a big-money deal, played the full 90 minutes as United sealed a 3-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Martial provided an assist during the game to add to his already impressive tally of four goals in his first five appearances for the Red Devils.

And Van Gaal, who is believed to have splashed out as much as £36m to bring Martial to the club, has conceded that the forward has had more of an impact than he had anticipated.

Van Gaal told his post-match news conference at Old Trafford on Saturday: “I am very pleased with the performance of Anthony because he is not only a goal-scorer, he is also an attacking point and he also prepares goals.

“So for us he is more important than I thought before he came.”
