Arsenal deliver injury update on striker Danny Welbeck
Arsenal confirm that Danny Welbeck will be out of action for "months" after undergoing knee surgery
Danny Welbeck has been ruled out of action for a “period of months” after the Arsenal striker underwent knee surgery this week.
The England international has not featured for the north London club since last season after picking up the problem in April.
Arsenal were previously hopeful that the former Manchester United man would recover from the problem without the need for surgery, but the Gunners revealed in a statement on Thursday afternoon that the striker had gone under the knife in a bid to rectify the long-running problem.
Arsenal statement on Welbeck
Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his left knee after being unable to sufficiently step up his rehabilitation work.
The striker has been working throughout the summer to recover from the injury sustained at the end of April.
It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.
Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well.
Welbeck scored eight goals in his first 34 games for Arsenal after joining the north London club from rivals Manchester United last summer.
His last appearance for the club came in the 2-1 win over Reading back on 18 April.
Arsenal, who are currently sixth in the Premier League table, return to top-flight action when they host Stoke City at Emirates Stadium after the international break.
