Arsenal legend hits out at ’embarrassing’ Man United
Martin Keown was not very impressed by Manchester United's late transfer activity this summer
Martin Keown has criticised Manchester United for their frantic deadline-day transfer activity, branding the Red Devils as “embarrassing”.
United brought in Monaco teenager Anthony Martial in a big-money deal as Louis van Gaal opted to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils also opted to let striker Javier Hernandez leave the club to join Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent deal on a busy deadline day for the Premier League outfit.
But former Arsenal defender Keown was less-than-impressed with the way the Red Devils handled the end of the transfer window.
Keown wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “It felt like United were rolling the dice on deadline day.
“It is hard to imagine that kind of soap opera happening under Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill. It was embarrassing.”
The former England centre-half went on to describe the signing of 19-year-old Martial as a huge risk for the Premier League outfit.
Man United’s summer signings
Anthony Martial – Monaco, Memphis Depay – PSV Eindhoven, Morgan Schneiderlin – Southampton, Matteo Darmian – Torino, Bastian Schweinsteiger – Bayern Munich, Regan Poole – Newport County, Sergio Romero – Sampdoria.
He continued: “The signing of Anthony Martial is a huge gamble. He has been compared to Thierry Henry and if he is half as good then he will be a decent player.
“Van Gaal likes a pacey ball-carrier — he had Arjen Robben at Bayern Munich and tried and failed to make Angel di Maria that man at United — and Martial fits the bill.
“He might even be the answer to their striker dilemma but it is still a big risk to take on an uncapped youngster.”
United, who lost 2-1 to Swansea City in their last Premier League outing, return to top flight action when they host Liverpool at Old Trafford after the international break on 12 September.
